Adopt a Senior Pet Month

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month!  There are many good reasons to adopt a senior pet. Take a Second Look: Consider Adopting an Adult Cat or Dog. We usually have plenty of adult cats in our Adult Cat Room. Many of our adult cats are included on our Available Cats webpage.

Stop by our Pet Adoption Center to visit all of our adult pets.

Holiday Cookie Trays!

Holiday Cookie Trays  -  Order Now!

Save yourself from baking. Buy an assortment of Holiday Cookies for $14 a tray. There are 36 cookies to a tray!  It is a great gift idea for a teacher, mail carrier, or neighbor. They are also popular to share at work, with family, or a holiday function. We usually sell out every year so be sure to order ahead!

Cookie Trays can only be purchased by pre-order!  Extra Cookie Trays, if available, can be purchased at the Bake Sale at Ace Hardware on December 9.

To order a Holiday Cookie Tray use the online order form and pay with PayPal.  Or, if you would prefer not to use PayPal, print and complete the paper order form and follow the mailing instructions on the form.  Happy Holidays!

Spay/Neuter Clinic for Cats/Kittens

HSCI is having a Low Income Spay/Neuter Clinic for Cats/Kittens only on Tuesday, November 14. The Spay/Neuter Clinic fee is $30 for each Cat or Kitten. Individuals receiving Governmental Aid such as WIC, LINK, Medical Card, SSI, or unemployment benefits qualify. Families facing other hardships, please call the office at (309) 451-1000 during regular business hours to determine if you qualify. Kittens must be at least eight weeks of age and two pounds to receive surgery.

  • Withhold all food after midnight on Monday, November 13.
  • Cats are dropped off on Tuesday, November 14 between 7:30 - 8:00 am at the Pet Adoption Center, 423 Kays Drive in Normal. Cats must be in a hard sided carrier with a towel in the bottom. One cat per carrier. If you need to borrow a carrier(s), please call the office in advance to make arrangements for pick-up.
  • Cats are to be picked up from the Pet Adoption Center on Tuesday, November 14 between 4:00 - 5:00 pm.

To speed up the check-in process, please print the Animal Surgery Consent Form for Spay/Neuter, and bring a completed form, for each cat, with you at the time of check-in.

The office will be closed and there will be no Pet Viewing Hours on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23. The shelter will still be open for volunteers to help care for the animals.

Holiday Supply Drive! Holiday Supply Drive!

This is our big Supply Drive of the year. The Supply Drive will take place Friday, November 24 through Saturday, December 23 and it's easy to contribute. A list of items will be posted at the entrance of participating locations. Just choose your purchase and drop it off at our box or bin at the exit. Participating this year are the following stores:

Barnes and Noble Book Fair!

Barnes and Noble is having a Book Fair on Saturday, November 25, from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Volunteers from HSCI will be helping with this fun event, which includes story-telling, arts and crafts, and gift wrapping. Plan to stop by with your whole family and say hello!

Volunteering

New Volunteer Class ~ This class is full!

Monday, November 27, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm at the Pet Adoption Center for new volunteers. This is your chance to learn about the variety of Volunteer Opportunities available and begin helping HSCI and our pets in a way which fits your interests and schedule. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or accompanied by a parent at training and each and every time for volunteering. Registration fee is $10 for each adult (16 or older) and $5 for each child (younger than 16).

Normal First United Methodist Church

#GivingTuesdayBloNo

HSCI will be participating in #GivingTuesdayBloNo, hosted by Normal First United Methodist Church. The church has planned this event as a way to support and promote local 501(c)3 programs with a personal touch.

HSCI and other organizations will have an opportunity to educate the community about their services through face-to-face contact and donors, especially those uncomfortable giving online, will have an easy way to make a contribution.

#GivingTuesdayBloNo will be held in the Normal First United Methodist lounge from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm and 4:00 - 6:00 pm. The church is located at 211 N. School Street in Normal.

Pet Outreach at Petco

Please join us for our Pet Outreach event at Petco on Sunday, December 3 from 12:00 - 3:00 pm where you can meet some of our shelter dogs who are looking for forever homes. We'll be there to answer any question you may have about our adoption process, and to talk with you about your pet needs. We'll have shelter information available and can let you know about any pets we have at our shelter. Stop by Petco at 1700 East College Avenue in Normal and visit with our dogs!

Miller Park Zoo - Wild Lights

Miller Park Zoo Wild Lights!

On Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9, the Miller Park Zoo will light up the night from 5:00 - 8:00 pm with hundreds of luminaries. HSCI will have an information table at this annual event.

The cost is $3 per person (ages 3 and up) for members, $7 per person (ages 3 and up) for non-members, and children under 3 are free.

Holiday Cookie Tray Pick-Up

The pre-ordered Holiday Cookie Tray Pick-Up will be Saturday, December 9, from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm at the Pet Adoption Center.

The holiday cookie trays and treats are a perfect item for a Secret Santa Exchange, a teacher, mail carrier, or neighbor. They are also popular to share at work, with family, or a holiday function.

Spay/Neuter Clinic for Dogs/Puppies

Spay/Neuter Clinic for Dogs/Puppies

HSCI is having a Spay/Neuter Clinic for Dogs/Puppies on Monday, December 11. The Spay/Neuter Clinic fee is $75 for each Dog or Puppy. Fee includes rabies vaccination. Puppies must be at least eight weeks of age to receive surgery. Puppies under four months of age will not receive a rabies vaccination. Dogs on medication or showing signs of respiratory infections will not be considered for surgery.

Appointments are required and space is limited. Please visit the Spay/Neuter Clinic for Dogs/Puppies - Registration webpage to register and pay online, or call our office at (309) 451-1000 to sign-up and register for this clinic. Payment in advance is required.

  • Dogs are dropped off at 7:00 am, Monday, December 11 at the Pet Adoption Center, 423 Kays Drive in Normal. Dogs must be in a hard sided carrier with newspapers in the bottom. One dog per carrier. If you need to borrow a carrier, please call the office in advance to make arrangements to have one available.
  • Dogs will be returned to their owners on Tuesday, December 12 between 8:45 - 9:15 am and are to be picked up from the Pet Adoption Center.
  • Owners must sign a surgery consent form at the time of check-in.

Disadvantaged Children's Party at Bloomington High School!

HSCI will be participating in the annual Disadvantaged Children's Party event, held at Bloomington High School on Saturday, December 16. Our volunteers will take dogs to the party so children can meet them.

The event is sponsored by the Bloomington-Normal Trades and Labor Assembly and the McLean County Chamber of Commerce.

Childrens’ Program at the Bloomington Public Library!

The HSCI will present a Childrens’ Program at the Bloomington Public Library on Friday, March 9 from 5:00 - 6:30 pm.

Our Education Committee will present a show-and-tell event in the Bloomington Public Library Childrens’ Department. The public is invited to attend.

April is Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month

Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month

In recognition of April as Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month, the ASPCA works with shelters and educators across the country to raise awareness about animal abuse. Did you know that you as an individual can help crack down on cruelty in your community, too? When a concerned citizen reports the abuse of an animal to the proper authorities, he or she is not only helping that particular animal, but a message is being sent that all acts of animal abuse should be taken seriously.
