My husband and I lost our 13 year old golden retriever in March from old age problems. He died in my arms. We are empty nesters, and after a month of the too quiet house we decided to adopt a golden mix rather than getting another pure breed puppy. We found one here at HSCI that was about a year old. We came to see her and just knew she was waiting for us. She had lots of energy, wanted to play and was willing to give love to us despite this being her third home. I figured she just needed lots of exercise, play and some training.
Sadie is so much company to me in the evenings since my husband works second shift. She is always by my side. Three months later she graduated beginning obedience class and got 2nd place! I've had so much fun working with her; I am going to start her in fly ball next. After the graduation the judge said she looks like a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. I had no idea what breed that was, so I looked it up on the AKC web site and she looks exactly like them. What a surprise! The breed was just recognized in 2005.
In our play time we do a lot of retrieving. Sadie is so happy, she actually has a smile on her face when she plays or trains. We didn't rescue her, she rescued us!
