Humane Society of Central Illinois

When my boyfriend and I moved in together last year we knew there was something missing from our home. We are both "dog people" so we started playing with the idea of finding a dog that would fit into our family of two.

I started searching the internet for breeders or puppies for sale in the newspaper, but then we came across the Humane Society of Central Illinois website and realized we needed to rescue a dog instead of buying one. We looked at the adoptable dogs on the website and found Lily (known as Ethel at HSCI), a 5 month old Border Collie mix. The next day we went to the adoption center and were eagerly looking for her and when we found her the picture hadn't done her justice at all. She was so full of energy and life.

When we played with her at the adoption center she wanted nothing to do with any of the toys, she just wanted love and attention from us. After watching my boyfriend and Lily interact I was very jealous, I had watched her turn him into putty in her paw in a matter of minutes. (While I had been trying to accomplish that trick for 2 years!) We decided to adopt her and brought her home the next day. It took us and her a little adjusting, but we knew that our house was now a home because of that little puppy.

About a month or two later we rescued a four month old black lab puppy (Jack) as a playmate for Lily, and the two of them were inseparable. Wherever one went the other followed and soon they were the king and queen of the castle, and we were just their loyal subjects!  :)

So what started out as a small family of two doubled into a family of four in a short couple of months, but we can't think of our lives any differently now without Lily and Jack. Through this whole experience of adopting Lily I have vowed to always save a life instead of just buying a pet. We would like to deeply thank the HSCI for their dedication to animals like our Lily!
